Artificial intelligence: a “promising technology”

Abstract This paper addresses the question of how ups and downs in development artificial intelligence (AI) since its inception can be explained. It focuses on Germany 1970s, particularly current dynamics. An assumption is made that a mere reference to rapid advances information technologies various methods concepts recent decades cannot adequately explain these dynamics, because from social science perspective, this an oversimplified, technology-centred explanation. Drawing ideas scientific innovation research, hypothesis rather should understood as “promising technology”. Its stages have always been driven by technological promises about special powers capabilities when applied solving economic societal challenges.
